Latest Additions: Sales and Surprises

It wasn’t too long ago that I sat down and wrote a bit about some of the games I had picked up recently. Since then there has been a little more growth in my collection (and the backlog) with a mix of physical and digital games being added. With an abundance of pre and post Christmas sales as well as New Year sales too, I couldn’t help but take a look at what was out there.

For Christmas, my brother and I actually gifted each other the same game by pure coincidence. We had mentioned a few games to one another when we had been talking about ideas for Christmas. Neither of us knew until we unwrapped our gifts over a video call that we had purchased the same game. The whole saga ended up with us all being in fits of laughter as my brother had sneakily pranked me by wrapping the game up with in another box, but the out box was coated in multiple layers of duct tape. You can only imagine how long it really took me to get into this box!

The game in question was the new Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity on Nintendo Switch. I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into the game soon. I played the original Hyrule Warriors back on the WiiU when it first came out. I’m hoping this will bridge the gap while we wait for The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2.

As for the games I picked during the sales, I think I did pretty well with finding some good bargains and getting the best value I could with what I had available to spend.

Xbox One

Immortals Fenyx Rising

I originally rented this from Boomerang Games as I was excited to play it but at the same time incredibly unsure if I actually would enjoy playing it. How I was wrong. The game blew me away from the start! It is beautiful, funny, engaging and I just can’t stop playing and exploring. I picked up my own copy as I plan to pick up the season pass as well in the future. I’ve been having far too much fun in photomode as well capturing all the different landscapes and in game moments. Definitely a game to check out this year!

Zoo Tycoon

This was more of an impulse buy more than anything I guess. I’ve been wanting to play Planet Zoo for so long now but due to my current PC setup, it isn’t going to happen. I was searching for games that were similar and had totally forgotten about the themed tycoon games. My little zoo is slowly but surely coming together but only time will tell how well it will do.

Lego The Incredibles

I’ve always enjoyed a good Lego game. I grew up playing the likes of Lego Loco, Lego Racer and Lego Rock Raiders to name a few, and they all hold a lot of amazing memories for me. I drifted away from the games for a few years but have slowly found my way back into the franchise again. I already own a couple of the Marvel/DC themed Lego games but wanted something a little different which is how I came to picking up The Incredibles. Although I haven’t started it yet, I can’t wait to jump in and discover what mayhem lays ahead for me.

PlayStation 4

Dreams

Dreams has been on my list to buy for so long now that when I saw it for £10 I knew it was a sign to pick it up. I’m not too sure what to expect or what I want to create first, but I would say I’m intrigued to see how things turn out.

Sakura Wars

I’ll be honest, I don’t know too much about the Sakura Wars franchise or any of the games. I’ve had this sat on my Boomerang Games rental list on and off since it’s release in twenty-nineteen. I always found I would swap it out for other games and eventually just took it off altogether. I kept thinking about the game every so often and when I found it on sale for a good price I decided it was a sign to pick it up and give it a go.

Nintendo Switch

Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory

The more I play the Kingdom Hearts games, the more I fall in love with them. I’ve been playing a lot of Kingdom Hearts 3 throughout twenty-twenty and even though Melody of Memory isn’t a main story game, this was one game I knew I wanted to pick up sooner rather than later. I also adore the soundtracks to the Kingdom Hearts games as well so this felt like the perfect combination all rolled together into the one game.

I mentioned at the start that I picked up a mix of physical and digital games. While the above mentioned games were all physical purchases, I did pick up a couple of digital games for the Nintendo Switch. I have to admit that there were so many games I would love to have picked up from the Nintendo eShop sale as the deals were amazing, but I didn’t want to go to mad. I had built up a fair collection of coins that allowed me to make the purchase of these four games even better.

The games that I picked up were

  • Journey of the Broken Circle
  • Cattails
  • Syberia 1& 2
  • Planet Alpha

Each of these games were all priced under £2 which was very surprising since a couple of these would normally sell at £15 or more! I’ve already played a little bit of Planet Alpha via the games demo prior to purchasing it and really enjoyed what I played. I’m looking forward to playing each of these over the next few months.

Did you pick up any new games during the end of year sales? Let me know in the comments!

  1. This reminded me to play Immortals Fenyx Rising, it seemed to get lost in all of the new releases at the end of 2020! I didn’t particularly buy new games at the end of the year, but I did get access to Game Pass, so that is a whole library to go through…
