I couldn’t decide if I wanted to write a First Impressions or a Let’s Talk blog post about Cyberpunk 2077 but the more I thought about it, the more neither type of blog post seemed to fit. I guess you could say I wanted a blank page with no real firm theme to it so that I could just write.
Now, as many of us know, Cyberpunk 2077 has been a bit of a controversial topic since its launch last week. After several delays, the game was finally released and while many of us waited excitedly to play, many of us had our initial experience overshadowed by numerous different problems. Some players ran into the odd issue here and there while others, especially those playing on previous generation consoles seemed to be coming up against numerous issues more frequently.
Even the first wave of reviews has been drawing attention to issues that appeared to have been overlooked, although those seem to have been addressed in a recent patch. However, there are still a number of issues that still need to be addressed in the forthcoming patches.
My own experience hasn’t been the smoothest of rides but it hasn’t been completely terrible. I’m playing on a previous generation Xbox One X and initially, I didn’t have any obvious issues. There was the odd clipping issue or gliding NPC but nothing major until I started experiencing random game crashes. While I didn’t lose too much progress it was ever so slightly frustrating when it started to happen more frequently. However, the first patch did seem to fix this issue for me. Graphically I can just about play with minimal issues. I did spend some time tweaking a few settings to try and make some improvements and while this did slightly work, it is far from perfect but it’s okay for now.
Even though the first patch fixed a few issues, I did start to experience a lot more game lag after this update. I can play with a little bit of lag but this was more to the point that it made the game completely unplayable. The second patch has reduced the amount of lag I’ve experienced but it does hinder my overall experience when I play.
I’m not far enough into the game to ideally talk about features or game mechanics specifically or confidently but from what I have been able to play so far, I’m enjoying the story and exploring Night City. It may well be a little while before I dive back into the game myself and have a proper playthrough of the game. Currently, I’m torn between just casually playing my current save or waiting for updates and starting over again.
Even though the negatives of the game’s launch has definitely overshadowed the game itself, I’m still remaining optimistic that the game will improve over time with additional patches. It is something that will definitely take time to get the issues addressed and make the improvements needed but I am hopeful that the work CD Projekt Red is doing will rectify the majority of issues.
There a lot of things that could well have been said and done prior to Cyberpunk 2077’s launch but we are now at the point where things will hopefully start to look up in the coming months.
What are your thoughts on Cyberpunk 2077 so far?
