With 2017 coming to a close in just a few hours I decided to take a look back at some of my favourites games of the year. Of course there were too many to choose from and as hard as it was to choose, I’ve somehow managed to narrow it down to just four games.
Final Fantasy XV (Xbox One)
I saw this one day just sat on the shelf in a Smyth’s Toy Stores and as soon as I saw it I just knew I needed to pick the game up and play it. I didn’t read any reviews, watch any trailers, nothing at all. I went purely by fact that I just needed to get it and I am so glad I did. I had played a few earlier Final Fantasy games but nothing for a long time. From the moment that the game first loaded up the I was hooked. The story line, the graphics everything just came together perfectly. I played the game consistently even after completing the main story and countless side quests. The addition of the downloadable content and also the online multiplayer Comrades has just made my whole experience with Final Fantasy XV even better.
Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)
Super Mario Odyssey came bundled with my Nintendo Switch when I bought it back in November. I had been following the game since it’s announcement back at E3 this year but there was just something about the game that had captured my attention even though at the time I didn’t own a Switch. Fast forward a few months and I’m sat collecting Power Moons from across the world and still nowhere near done collecting them. Playing the game took me back to when I would spend my time after school trying to collect stars on Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64.
Life Is Strange: Before The Storm (PC)
I absolutely loved the first Life is Strange game so I did not hesitate in buying Life Is Strange: Before The Storm when it came out. This game had me on such a roller coaster of emotions as well as on the edge of my seat at times. I’ve already started my next play through of the game now Episode 3 has been released. It does make me wonder what Square Enix have in store for the Life Is Strange franchise in 2018.
Overwatch has been that one game this year that I have stuck by the most. It has provided so many laughs, salty moments, rage quits and just good times all year. Blizzard have brought some great seasonal events to the game this year which I’m hoping make a comeback in the New Year as well as well as new characters and maps including the upcoming Blizzard World that I played on the Public Test Realm not long ago.
Skill wise though I have improved but I still have a lot to learn. I do have moments where I will just run in and die instantly or misjudge a move and my plan backfires but that will surely improve in 2018. If not I will still be able to provide some good Overwatch fails for my friends!
I must also add another handful of games worth mentioning which I’ve loved this year. These games being Pokemon Silver, Destiny 2, The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Stardew Valley, Super Lucky’s Tale and also Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
I have high hopes for 2018 and the gaming industry as a whole. There are loads of great games lined up for the next 12 months with many more to come and be announced throughout the year.
So goodbye to 2017 and hello to a brand new and exciting 2018. I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us all!
